Notice to All Employees: How to Use Signage to Solve Branding Problems in Business Part 4

“There’s barely a product or service on the market today that customers can’t buy from agreement-3489902_640.jpgsomeone else for about the same price, about the same quality, about the same level of service and about the same features.” This insight provided by Simon Sinek, author of Start with Why tells us that although you may offer a wonderful service or product, chances are what you are offering is not unique.

This may be discouraging for employees and employers alike, but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, it can provide you with a clue as to why your customers come to you and continue to come to you in the first place.

One saleswoman sat down with a potential client and explained the services that their company offered, how they could help that client, and how the services would make a difference for him. However, the conversation was not just a list of details and services. It was more than just making a sale, getting a commission, or adding another customer to the list. More than anything the saleswoman focused on making friends with the customer and genuinely caring about who they were and what they needed. At the end of the conversation, the customer looked at the saleswomen and said, “I want to work with your company. It’s not because of your services or your prices, it’s because of you.”

What does this story tell us? Well, like Sinek’s analysis, this story too tells us where to look for why our customers work with us. You see, with customers it’s all about the connection.

Problem

While this understanding can make a difference, just having this knowledge is not enough. It must be applied. When customers are in the store, there are some simple ways to make this connection. Just read any number of inspirational books like How to Win Friends and Influence People or How I Raised Myself From Failure to Success in Selling for a number of powerful in-person tools.

But what about those who have yet to cross your threshold? What about those pulling up to your store or business for the first time?

Solution

If customers don’t believe in you,Chris Brady, New York Times bestselling author, CEO, and speaker advises that in order to connect with your customers, you must figure out their problem and sell them the solution to their problem. How do you do this? Well, he says that step one of selling your solution is selling yourself. They have to believe in you and that you know what you are doing. If customers don’t believe in you, they certainly won’t believe in your product.

How Can Sign Solve This Problem?

A top sign can improve your branding by showing that you are credible, knowledgeable, and dependable making it easier to connect with your customers. Let’s see how:

Signage: Connects with Customers

Martin Luther King Jr Pole Sign
The Martin Luther King Jr. Sign by Landmark Signs Inc.

If it’s important to sell yourself, then you have to make sure that everything about your company echoes that your company is valuable. Signs can tell a story of who your company is and what it values. Like we have discussed before, each sign type sends a different message. And if you have the right sign, your sign can send virtually any message you want. You can show that you are an expert in your field, that you are trustworthy and reliable, that you are caring and kind, and a variety of other messages that will directly connect with customers.

How important is signage in connecting with customers? A recent study showed that a large majority of your business will come from within 5 miles of your store. Furthermore, if found that “the average person will see your sign about twice per day, or about sixty times a month.” That’s sixty chances a month to make a connection with your customers! Opportunity after opportunity to show customers what your business stands for.

Zae's Boutique Business Sign

Take a second and put yourself in the perspective of a consumer. Now, go stand outside and look at your sign. And when you do, ask yourself, what would I think of this business based solely on its sign? Would you trust them? Do they look like experts? Do they care about their customers? Or does the sign make you feel like the business is flaky, cheap, or unreliable? If so, that’s sixty negative impression made on customers every month. Or, if you don’t have a sign at all, that sixty missed opportunities to make a connection with customers!

Conclusion

Using signage to connect with customers is a powerful way to improve your brand. Often, a sign is the first impression your business makes upon customers and can be the deciding factor for whether or not a customer will use you services or buy your products. If you want to improve your own sign of put one up in the first place, call of email Landmark Signs today.

Notice to All Employees: How to Use Signage to Solve Branding Problems in Business Part 3

Signage to Solve Branding Business Problems Landmark Signs Inc..pngCredibility is defined as “the quality or power of inspiring belief” (1). Some of the word’s synonyms include believably, honesty, integrity, truthfulness, authenticity, and genuineness. The undercurrent connecting all of these phrases and definitions together for a company is their ability to truly deliver on who they say they are. Whether a company guarantees the best customer service, the number one products, or one-day delivery, a business needs to keep its word every time in order to maintain credibility with their customers.

Problem

However, this is not always easy to do. Just a quick web search revealed some big name companies, that have some of the worst reputations

For example, Wells Fargo promises on its website that: “We place customers at the center of everything we do. We want to exceed customer expectations and build relationships that last a lifetime” (2). While that may very well be the intention, many one-star reviews reveal otherwise. One customer complained that the bank never has “merchant tellers and the lines are always long. Terrible customer service: (3).

Another instance of a company with poor credibility is Sears. While it promises on its website for finding jobs to be an “integrated retail company that provides superior value through trusted brands, great products and convenient, reliable services” (4), customer reviews tell a different story. One review said that after her experience she was “done with Sears and I will let all my friends and family know my experience today.” Another claimed that she was “not at all surprised reading about horrible customer service” (5). It seems that, unfortunately, Sears’s poor reputation preceded them.

The problem with having a hard time living up to a promise is that when a company grows large enough, it can be at the mercy of its employees. And if those employees aren’t dedicated to living up to a company’s vision and promises, then the reputation of the company will suffer. Which, as we discussed in the previous blogs, will affect everyone in the business.

Solution

achievement-3612401_640.jpgWhile the problem of building or rebuilding a company’s credibility can most certainly not be solved overnight, focusing on maintaining a positive brand identity is certainly a step in the right direction. Last week, we discussed how positive branding can help a company send a clear message about the company. Furthermore, branding can also help display and confirm a company’s credibility.

How Signs Can Solve this Problem

A creative sign that reflect positively on a company’s brand can most certainly impact a company’s reputation and nudge it in the right direction. Let’s take a look at how:

Signage: Displays Company Credibility

It may be hard to imagine how a sign can help send the message of credibility to your customers. However, a recent study found that “more than two thirds (68%) of consumers believe a store’s signage is reflective of the quality of its products and services” (6). That means that two out of every three potential consumers who view your sign, believe that what they see on the outside of your store, will reflect what they see on the inside.

That’s because for many people, a company’s sign is the first impression that they will have of that business. It’s the first thing that greets them when they pull up into your parking lot or head into your store. And as the old saying goes, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

There are many signs that can send the first impression of credibility and dependability.

Couture-Salon (1)

For instance, a Monument Sign tells passers-by that your business has longevity and is here to stay. A Gold Leaf Sign shows customers that your company and all its customers are as valuable and solid as gold. And an elegant Wall Sign shows consumers that you have a reputation for class and quality.

The right sign can help transform your brand by setting a tone of trustworthiness, dependability, and credibility.

Conclusion

One of the founders of our country, Thomas Jefferson is credited with saying that “honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.” If a company and its employees expect to experience long-lasting success, they must first prove that they can be trusted. A company that is establishes itself through false promises might as well have built its foundation upon sand. With a solid base of trust, it is only a matter of time until their walls will crumble.

Whether you are a new business looking to establish a reputation of trust or long-lasting one looking to rebuild your brand as a credible, using a well-made sign will send the right message about your company from the very start. Call or email Landmark Signs Inc today, to display your company’s credibility.

Notice to All Employees: How to Use Signage to Solve Branding Problems in Business Part 2

document-3268750_640.jpg“The heart of your business success lies in its marketing. Most aspects of your business depend on successful marketing. The overall marketing umbrella covers advertising, public relations, promotions and sales.” (1) This means that any job that falls under one of the above categories is directly affected by the success of their marketing department.

The Problem

However, as we learned in last week’s blog, most B2B companies are struggling with the unity of these departments. For a company to experience continued success, which should be a concern for all employees, this disconnect must be solved.

The Solution

One way by which to achieve this is through branding. According to businessdictionary.com, branding is “the process involved in creating a unique name and image for a product in the consumers’ mind, mainly through advertising campaigns with a consistent theme” (2). And in order to do this successfully, a company must make sure that their brand does all of the following:

Sends a clear message

Displays company credibility

Connects with consumers

Inspires customers to buy products or services

Encourages customer loyalty (3).

How Signs Can Solve this Problem

A well-made sign has the capability of meeting all of the successful branding requirements. Today, let’s dive in deeper to how signage can be used to send a clear message.

Signage: Sends a Clear Message

Kelvin Court Apartments Monument Signs by Landmark Signs Inc.

Like any organization or department, a large part of the struggle with sales and marketing unity is due to a lack of or poor communication. Because successful communication requires both the speaker and the receiver to understand the same message, confusion is a common occurrence.  In fact, “Poor communication is frustrating in the workplace and can lead to poor performance, lack of teamwork, low morale and reduced profits” (4). This is true for both the employees within the company and the customers outside of the company.

So, just how exactly can signage come to the rescue? Well, when a company comes together to make a sign purchase, it forces a discussion of what type of message they want to send with that sign. And signs have the capability of sending any number of messages. A Monument Sign tells a story of a business that is substantial and long lasting. A Gold Leaf Sign says that your company is as good as gold and you treat your customers the same way. An illuminated sign can be used to catch the viewers attention and send the message that your business stands out from the crowd.

Landmark Signs Inc Signs First Impression (1).pngOnce this is established, it is infinitely less complicated to get both your sales and marketing department on the same page about your branding. Your sign sends the first message and makes the first impression upon your customers. Your sales and marketing department merely have to reiterate this message. Whatever is emphasized through your signage, can influence all your marketing strategies and sales tactics moving forward. Once all employees are receiving the same message through the signage, they can then send the same message. This helps employees have a stronger idea of the company’s goals and where they are headed, which most certainly creates teamwork within a company.

Conclusion

As Abraham Lincoln faced attempting to solve the major problems facing the United checkmate-1511866_640.jpgStates in the 1860’s, he rightfully pointed out that “a house divided against itself cannot stand.” Had he not had the foresight as the leader of this country to solve the problems causing division among our states, who knows where our country would be today or if it would even exist as an independent nation.

The same goes for any company. If there is not unity within the departments, particularly between sales and marketing, longevity will be unattainable. All employees will be affected when a company struggles. Therefore, it is up to all employees to see that their business is unified. Signs can contribute to this by sending a clear message, a necessity for any successful brand.

To start taking control of the message your company sends through branding, contact Landmark Signs today for your own sign.

Notice to All Employees: How to Use Signage to Solve Branding Problems in Business Part 1

digital-marketing-1433427_640Marketing and sales jobs are made to work hand in hand. If the marketers are accomplishing their goals, then salesmen will experience more success and vice versa. However, these two are not usually copasetic the way they were designed to be. Sometimes this is due to corporate decisions (or lack of decisions) that are made. Perhaps it has to do with the company’s culture. Or maybe it is because of a bad manager. Regardless of the reason, the truth remain that division exists in these two fields. In fact,  “a Forrester study found that only 8% of B2B companies have tight marketing and sales alignment” (1). Yikes! That is an extremely low number and is reflective of a disappointing trend.

Landmark Signs Inc Sales and Marketing.pngFor those employees that are involved in the fields of marketing and sales at their workplace, like we discussed in last week’s blog, you have a choice. Even though the company you work for is most certainly dependent upon your success, you may not have a lot of say in how these departments are run. So, you can put your hands up and think that since you are not the owner, CEO, or even a manager, it’s not really your problem. But as we learned last week, if your company struggles, no jobs are immune from taking the hit right along with the business. The other option is that you can get involved and recognize that your company’s success or lack of success will directly impact you. So you better take this business seriously and help contribute to the positive growth of your company.

The Problem

One of the ways we recommend this is to find solutions for the problems your company is dealing with. As we have already identified, 92% of business to business companies are struggling with maintaining unity between two of their most important divisions.

The Solution

So how can a business solve this problem? One of the ways is to make sure that both departments are telling the same story to those that they communicate with. In order to do this, of course, everybody has to know what that story is. This is where branding comes in. Author of “Consumer Behavior for Dummies”, Laura Lake, advises that companies “think of branding as though your company or organization were a living, breathing person. Imagine this person explaining who they are, why they’re valuable, and what they specifically have to offer. As consumers begin to identify with you, your brand will live in the hearts and minds of customers, clients, and prospects, and they’ll connect on an emotional level.” She also adds that a good brand will do the following:

“Clearly deliver a message

Confirm the brand’s credibility in the marketplace

Emotionally connect target prospects with a product or service

Motivate the buyer to make a purchase

Create user loyalty” (2).

How Signs Can Solve this Problem

First American Monument Sign by Landmark Signs Inc.

Having been in the sign industry for over 40 years, we have seen signs come to the rescue for many company problems. Our business owner learned the sign trade from his own father the old fashioned way, through hand-painted letters. And even a business investing in this type of signage, whose impact would be low next to some of the top sign technology of today, saw an improvement in their business. What passer-by doesn’t feel something when they drive by and see the sign of their favorite coffee shop or restaurant? A well-made sign can not only send the right message to your consumers, but it can also get your sales and marketing departments on the same page.

Conclusion

Signs, from Monument Signs to Retail Signs and more, all have the ability to solve the problems that most businesses face. Whether you are an employee that makes major decisions that affect the company or you are merely beginning your journey at that business, caring about how your company does means caring about how you do. Branding is just one area that you can concern yourself with.

Check back in with us next week to learn specifically how your company can use signage to improve branding.

Top 5 Ways Get Your Brand Noticed With Signage

Image result for 1960s advertising coca cola

Since the earliest days of advertising, brand awareness has been a top priority. In fact, during the Mad Men days of advertising in the 1960’s “advertisers began to differentiate individual brands by giving them a personality” (1). Suddenly as company’s attempted to connect to a generation that was all about freedom of expression and love, Campbell’s soup was “groovy”, Pepsi was thinking young, and Coca Cola just wanted peace, man.

While the approach has shifted in today’s advertising world, branding is just as important as businesses recognize that “your brand reflects your identity as a company. That’s why you want it to convey a sense of who you are and what you do” (2).  In modern marketing, it is less about telling your customers what you think they want to hear, and more about being honest and authentic in the representation of your company and what they stand for.

Signage has its earliest beginnings in ancient Greece and Rome and has been a

trusted part of branding ever since. While other methods of branding have shifted over the years, along with the goal of branding, signage has stayed just as reliable as ever. In fact, a recent survey found that “68% of consumers believe a store’s signage is reflective of the quality of its products or services” (read more here). More than two-thirds of those that are out there buying your goods, believe that your sign is the ultimate representation of your brand. Let’s take a closer look at the top 5 ways you can get your brand noticed with signage.

Light up the Night

Illuminating your signage is an extremely effective way to get your brand noticed. This is especially true during the winter months when signs that are not lighted will lose all visibility once the sun sets. At this time of the year, the night comes much earlier and right around the time when most commuters are coming home from work (learn more here). Getting your brand noticed at all times of the day is an absolute must if you want to continue to make a strong impression.

Signs of all types can be illuminated, from Channel Letter Signs to Pole Signs to Awning Signs and more. To check out more reasons to illuminate your sign, click here.

Conclusion

How to Avoid Common Sign Mistake #6

“The possibilities for signage are limited only by imagination and budget.  In fact, many businesses will benefit from using more than one type of sign as part of their overall strategy” (1).

startup-594091_1920When businesses think of purchasing signage for their company, they are often considering just one sign type. They might have just moved into a location and need a new sign above their store, so they stay focused on purchasing just a Channel Letter Sign. Or maybe a property owner sees the need for a Monument Sign so that his or her tenants can advertise on it from the street. And there are those that want to capitalize on having a business right by the freeway so they get a Pole Sign to be seen from far distances.

While all of these investments are worth it, a business does itself harm when it gets hyper focused on just one sigh type and does not see the other opportunities that different sign types can provide them. This is often the result of companies wanting to fix the immediate problem. However, in an article entitled Why Great Business Leaders Must Address the Big Picture, it states that

big picture thinking means strategic thinking. Brand strategy and business strategy are all about seeing the whole picture. Considering things in a silo never creates impactful strategy. And often leaders get hung up on tactical details that stall powerful, strategic thinking” (2).

Signage is a critical part of your big picture business strategy, and if it isn’t already, now is the time to make it a part of your brand strategy. There are many reasons that signage is an integral part of marketing a business (click here to learn more), including the fact that 75% of consumers have said that they have referred a business simply because of its signage (3). The value of that word of mouth marketing cannot be overstated. So it is vital that when purchasing signage, a business thinks long term and examines all the sign opportunities they have.

Common Sign Mistake #5: Only Having One Sign Type

It is important that in order to capitalize on the benefits of signage, a company invests in several sign types since each sign type has its own unique advantage. Let’s take a closer look at a few of the different sign types and what they can do for your business.

Wall & Building Signs

These are some of the most common sign types, since Wall & Building Signs go directly above a store’s door or right on the building. While they most obviously provide the opportunity for a customer to identify your company and its location, it also provides other benefits.

First of all, a Wall Sign, like a Channel Letter Sign, if it is done well and is of high quality, often makes the first impression upon your customers. They usually see this sign before even being greeted by your receptionist. Additionally, a company that takes the time to put up a Building Sign shows those passing by that they are a company that is there to stay. And like with most signs, if you illuminate your Wall Sign, then you will stand out even more from all the other signs in the area (to learn about the other benefits of illuminated signage, click here).

Monument Signs

While you may not know what they are called, you have most definitely seen a Monument Sign. They are the ones that are located right by the street.

What is the point in having a Monument Sign? Well there are many reasons. One of which is the fact that they get your business to be seen by people driving by on the street. This is vital if your building is set back from the street and further in the complex. This is also helpful if your building is blocked by trees, another building, or some other obstruction that makes your building hard to see from the street.

Furthermore, a Monument Sign, made out of substantial materials and large in size, tells your potential customers that your business is substantial and permanent. Click here to learn even more about how Monument Signs can help your business grow.

Directional Signs

Directional Signs are located within a building and outside of it around a complex. For schools, malls, hospitals, and more these signs are a must. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to find the location of a company and not being able to. Directional Signs can ensure that your customers arrive at your company easily and in a good mood.

In addition to helping your customers quickly find your building or office, Directional Signage also shows a consumer that you care about them and want to make sure that they are taken care of. It also sends that message that you are a legitimate company and have invested in not only your business, but also in your customers. Click here for even more information about Directional Signage.

Conclusion

These are only three of the many different sign types that are necessary for most, if not all businesses. In order to make sure that you take advantage of all the benefits that signs have to offer, contact Landmark Signs today. Check out this blog to learn about even more sign types.

How to Avoid Common Sign Mistake #5

Several years ago, Landmark Signs worked with a nationwide distributor of dental supplies, Benco Dental. They were looking for signage for their Costa Mesa, CA office. Their building was located on the corner of the street, which meant that they had two sides of their building that would face the street. In a desire to cut costs, they very easily could have been satisfied with one Store-Front Sign, assuming that that one singular sign would increase their viewership and sales enough.

And it is true, signage does result in an increase in sales. In fact, a study found that “Three out of four consumers say they have told someone about a store based simply on its signage” (1). This shows that signage leads to a 75% increase in their word of mouth marketing, which is one of the most significant forms of advertising in today’s world (click here to learn more about advertising with signage). Your sign, its existence and its quality, make a substantial impact on your visibility and consumer reach.

With such an boost in visibility, many businesses stop with just one sign because they think it is enough. However, they are often missing out on an even larger jump in sales by not thinking big enough. David J. Schwartz, author of the “The Magic of Thinking Big”, advised that people “look at things not as they are, but as they can be. Visualization adds value to everything. A big thinker always visualizes what can be done in the future. He isn’t stuck with the present” (2).

Benco Dental certainly personified this quote when they thought long term, looked ahead, and realized that an extra investment now would pay off ten-fold down the road. Not only did they purchase a high-quality Building Sign for one side of their building, they also took advantage of the extra store front space, and purchased a second Channel Letter Sign. Plus, to reflect even more positively on their company, they also bought a sleek Monument Sign to send a message of permanence and class. Check out their elegant signage below:

Settling for one sign, when you have the opportunity to have several, is missing out on a great opportunity to grow sales and viewership.

Common Sign Mistake #5: Having One Sign, When You Need Several

Depending upon your building, there are often several places where additional signage can be placed. Sometimes a building has an interior face within a complex, while the back of the building faces the street. This is an excellent place to put another Store-Front Sign in order to be seen by passers-by on the street.

Or perhaps you have the chance to add a Monument Sign to your property that already has a Channel Letter Sign. Adding a Monument Sign pulls in people driving by who would otherwise not realize that your business is inside that complex.

Or maybe you have a Store-Front Sign, but have additional wall space within your building for a Lobby Sign. A well-designed Lobby Sign warmly greets customers walking into your store and solidifies the positive impression they have of you after seeing your Business Sign.

What about also having ADA Signs to make your interior easier to navigate? Or adding Directional Signage to make your complex more customer friendly? Or placing a Pole Sign on your property to also be seen from far distances?

There are endless possibilities for almost every space in which additional signage can gain new customers and sales for your business. Think big, take advantage of your location, and capitalize on every chance to increase your business’s presence.
