3 More Reasons Your Business Can Fight Back at Amazon with Signage

“You can’t build a consumer brand in 2018 and ignore the 800-pound Gorilla that is Amazon” (Sophie Baker, How to Beat Amazon). Amazon has exploded onto the business scene the last few years and it has become a force to be reckoned with for any product, consumer-based company.  They provide any number of products, from the largest like a 1,325-pound gun safe to the tiniest item like the world’s smallest Bluetooth speaker that can fit in the palm of your hand.  There’s the clever product (a mug that won’t tip over for all those clumsy drinkers), the helpful item (IFetch – your dog can play fetch all by himself), and the downright bizarre (a Nicolas Cage pillow because why not?).  Virtually Related imageanything a consumer can think of, Amazon can provide. And to top it all off, a shopper can order any of these products without even having to get out of bed. How can any other business possibly compete?  Amazon literally has it all.

Well like any Titan, there is an area where they are vulnerable.  Achilles had his heel, Macbeth has his blind ambition, Marie Antoinette had her cake, and Amazon has its customer experience.  And by that, we mean it doesn’t have the customer experience.  How can it possibly create an experience for its customers when the customer is in control of all of that (will Michelle buy her Shea Moisture Curl and Shine Shampoo from her iPhone 8 sitting on her green velvet sofa or on will Brian purchase his Sony Extra Bass Wireless Headphones on his Apple MacBook Pro on his lunch break?).

This is the chance to get the upper hand.  In our last blog, we explored why signage can help you fight back at Amazon because of this very reason – that it helps create a better customer experience.  Furthermore, because signage is the original form of marketing and it gives consumers back some control, it is the ideal way to stand out from the Amazonian giant.  Today, we will look at 3 more reasons your business can fight back at Amazon with signage.

Signage Can be Made of Quality Materials

This may seem like an odd place to start. Isn’t something concrete like material usually something you get to after you have gone over all the fluffy, vague reasons like “draw your customers to you” or “tell your best story”? While it is important to emotionally appeal to our readers, we know that you are in a business and so you need to literally get down to business.  And you may be reading this blog sitting in an office that has a sign hanging right outside your store. Which means you need a reason to keep reading.

Well, here it is.  Excuse me while we get emotional for a second.  Take a look at your sign. What type of message is it sending?  Does it tell of a quality business that takes its customer’s needs seriously or does it look like a sign that was quickly ordered and quickly made?  Was it a priority marketing tool that you invested in just like you will invest in your customers or was it an afterthought that might lead your clients into thinking that they themselves might become an afterthought?

It is not enough to just have a sign.  A business must have a sign that reflects with its quality of material the quality of the service.  Especially since “three out of four consumers say they have told someone about a store based simply on signage” (Source). Your company provides the best service it can, so make sure that your sign reflects that.  Choose from quality signs made out of the best materials like Gold Leaf Signs, Internally LED Illuminated Storefront Signs, or Wood Lobby Signs.

Signage Sends A Powerful Message

Once you have a sign that tells of the quality company that you are, your sign will show potential consumers that you are a company that takes itself and its customers seriously.  Your sign can send any number of powerful messages. A strong Monument Sign tells customers that you are reliable and dependable.  A custom-made 3D Sign shows consumers that you are are creative and interesting.  A Gold Leaf Sign sends the message that your company is literally “as good as gold”.

Why is this important?  Studies have been done that explain that when it comes to new business “a vast majority of what you’ll get comes from people who live within 5 miles of your store.  That means the average person will see your sign about twice per day, or about sixty times per month” (Source). Those are a lot of opportunities to send the right message or the wrong one.  Which one does your business sign send?

Signage Impresses Clients

“Your business can survive only if your customers feel attracted to your products and services” (successstory.com).  You can have the best Chinese food in the whole city, the Related imagemost helpful college consultant anyone has ever met, or even be a part of the famed Michael Scott Paper Company, but if your potential consumers don’t feel drawn to your businesses, you will never get the chance to close the deal.

Signage is a powerful tool to make the best first impression because for many of your customers, it is their first interaction with your business.  Whether it is your powerful Monument Sign that they see when driving by your business on the street or the graceful Lobby Sign they see hung on your wall when they walk into your store, signage gives you the opportunity to sell your company without having to utter a single word.

Conclusion

While Amazon may have an advantage in its range of products and its speedy delivery, there are several areas in which you can beat them.  Signage provides the chance to fight back at Amazon because it gives customers back some control, it is the original form of marketing, and it enhances the customer experience.  Additionally, if your sign is made out of quality materials, it will send a powerful message to potential buyers and impress your clients.

Why Do Signs Matter? Business Sign Statistics – Signs Are Your First Impression

Why Do Signs Matter_ Business Sign Statistics - Signs are Your First Impression

will-rogers-401259_1920Stage actor, vaudeville performer, and nationally syndicated newspaper columnist, Will Rogers, said it best when he stated, “You never get a second chance to make a good first impression.”  Based on his success, this is a mantra that he lived by because by the time the 1930’s rolled around, he had made 71 movies, wrote more than 4,000 newspaper columns, and was the highest paid Hollywood film star of his time (Source).  Adored by the public and sought after by directors, editors, and even the world-renown Ziegfeld Follies, Rogers knew how important it was to make a first impression that would turn into a lasting impression.

So what does all of this have to do with your business sign?  You already, no doubt, make a great impression upon your potential clients.  As soon as they enter your business, they tie-690084_1920are greeted by a warm, friendly receptionist who directs their attention to water or coffee available while they wait.  They happily sip their coffee while flipping through a Star magazine to catch up on who Taylor Swift is dating now in your lobby that feels more like a relaxing, welcoming spa than a cold, matter-of-fact business.  Soon, they are introduced to your best salesman, dressed for sales success in a tailored, navy blue Armani wool and single-breasted suit, and led back to a professional office with a mahogany desk and dark green leather chairs.  You have set up the perfect environment to give your potential customers the first impression that not only are they going to be taken care of, but that you are successful as what you do and your business is here to stay.

A business like that would have a harder time getting their customers to leave than getting them to stay.  However, for many possible customers this is not actually their first impression of you.  Their first impression of you is usually long before you have the chance to wow them with your personality and your professionalism.

Business Sign Statistic # 4: “When it comes to local business, a vast majority of what you’ll get comes from people who live within 5 miles of your store. That means the average person will see your sign about twice per day, or about sixty times per month” (Source).

What this tells us is that many of your potential customers are actually getting their first impression about your company from your sign. Furthermore, they see your sign again and again, which means that whatever first impression they get of your company will most likely be solidified again and again. A study done by Bertram Gawronski, social psychologist and professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, found that the “results support the common observation that first impressions are notoriously persistent.”

Potential customers are actually getting their first impression about your company from your sign. Are you proud of the first impression that your company makes_

Think about your sign. In fact, you may even want to step outside for a minute and take a look at your sign.  Remember that much of your business comes from customers who see your sign first and that first impressions are notoriously hard to shake.  Consider what type of first impression is your sign making upon your potential customers. Are you proud of the first impression that your company makes?  Would you enter your own business based on your sign alone?  Does your sign tell of a business that is successful and longlasting?

If your answer to any of these questions is no, it is time to give Landmark Signs a call to make your best first impression. You will never be able to show your customers how valuable your services and products are if they do not even step foot in your door.

Which Sign Type Should I Choose? Window Graphics

Gold Leaf & Chipped Glue Window Display

First impressions can tell you a lot about a person.  For example, someone’s name can tell you about his or her parents in the name that they chose and possibly a person’s cultural background.  How they introduce themselves can give you more information too.  Is this individual confident?  Is he shy?  Is she outgoing?  Furthermore, how does this person dress?   Is he or she fashion conscious?  Or is that individual more business minded and professional?

As helpful as these first impressions are, they may or may not be accurate.  It is in the details, the information we learn as we get to know a person even better that confirms or disaffirms our initial impression.  Sometimes, we come to find that we were spot on.  This person is very much like who we originally assumed them to be.  But more often than not the details we learn about a person after that first impression,  surprise us or greatly expand upon that person we thought we had all figured out.

The same can be said of signage.  That Channel Letter Sign above your store, the Monument Sign by the street, or the Directional Signage around your property are usually the first impression a customer will have about your company.  It tells a client what your company name is and the design of that signage reflects your business’ priorities.  But where do the details come in?  These types of signs do not generally give you the chance to tell a potential customer about specific details.  That is where Window Graphics come in.  Let’s learn more about this sign type:

Large Advertising Space

Windows are usually a large surface ideal for advertising; display your company name, logo, store hours, motto, or more information with Window Graphics.

It’s all about the details.  And windows are an ideal and convenient location to advertise your business and its details.

Window Graphics can be applied vinyl, hand-painted, a full-color print, gold leaf and even illuminated.  With a Landmark Signs Window Graphic, you can advertise conveniently and creatively for an affordable cost.  Confirm the already positive impression you have already left through your Monument Signs, Channel Letter Sign, or Directional Signs.

Which Sign Type Should I Choose? Lobby Signs

First impressions last.  Our first interaction with someone and the feelings we have after those encounters, be it on the personal or professional level, will often stay with us for a long time to come. However, after having spent more time with a person or a company, we eventually learn whether or not those first impressions were accurate. Think back to a time when you first met an individual and immediately felt at ease with them. Was that an indication of a natural chemistry between two people who would become great friends or form a lasting relationship, or was it a person who was hiding a different side behind layers of charm? Or that moving company that guaranteed satisfaction? Did they show up 5 hours later than promised and damage your hardwood floors during the move or did they arrive right on-time and treat your belongings as if they were their own? Because, while first impressions matter, so too do second and third and fourth impressions, and every other interaction onward.

So, you have drawn your client into your doors with a beautiful, substantial Monument Sign that left the impression of permanence and dependability. That Channel Letter Sign that you wanted to grab the attention of passers-by did it exactly what it was intended to and let the client know you were there for them, so he or she walked into your store, curious enough to find out if his or her first impression of you was correct. So how do you convince them of this with a second great impression? This is where Lobby Signs come in. Lobby Signs are another chance meant to make a lasting impression upon your customers. Does your Lobby Sign match what your exterior signage promised or does it leave a potential feeling let down by false promises? A Lobby Sign is an opportunity for you to live up to your client’s expectations and even exceed them.

Why else should you have a Lobby Sign?

Elegant and Dependable

Does the Sign Match Its Design? Introduction

When it comes to being an all-service sign company, at Landmark Signs we do not underestimate any part of that process.  No step is too small, and like a pyramid, we realize that every stone, from the base to the top, disturbs the entire structure.  If one stone is out of place or lose, than the whole pyramid will be affected.

The base of our Landmark Signs pyramid is the consultation with the client where we find out what the company’s sign goals.  Up a little bit higher the pyramid is the surveying process where we carefully analyze the site the sign will go.  This is followed by designing the project, a chance for us to show what we are made of by both listening to the client’s needs as well as providing our own sign expertise: a delicate balance.  Next we have manufacturing the sign which requires an expert touch to bring the design to life.  Last is the installation, the pinnacle of the pyramid, where a client can finally see the finished product.

Of course if any of these steps are skipped, done haphazardly, or taken lightly, the final product will not live up to the design and the client’s expectations.  This is what we want to focus on for the next few blogs.

The designing process is a multi-dimensional process.  For the client, it tells him or her visually what the sign will look like.  It is much more about aesthetics and shows the customer what can be expected from his or her sign.  Technically speaking, on our end of things, it sets the tone for the rest of the project.   If it is not done in an expert manner, than the plan, the map which must be followed, will lead the manufacturer and installer astray.

Here at Landmark Signs, we believe in delivering what we promised.  If we say a sign is going to look a certain way, then the installed sign should flawlessly reflect its design.

Cinema City: Portland Theatre Signs featuring the Hollywood Theatre

Signs give us a chance to pause for a moment and consider the building behind the sign and its history.  In Portland, there are a number of opportunities to do this, especially with theatre buildings because the city has maintained much of its theatre history. Marquee Filtered
The first example we see of this is the Hollywood Theatre which opened in 1926.  According the Puget Sound Pipeline, it opened “during the heyday of silent films and grandiose picture palaces…it was one of the most ornate neighborhood theatres in the Pacific Northwest” (Puget Sound Pipeline).  On the outside, it  was easily identifiable by it’s Byzantine inspired tower.  While, once one stepped foot into the theatre, the 1500 seat theatre and the art deco interior would have wowed visitors, at a time when movies accessible to the average worker for the first time.  It seems the architects behind the Hollywood Theatre desired to impress and treat the movie-goers to an experience they would not soon forget.  An opening day advertisement described the theatre as a “palace of luxury, comfort and entertainment unsurpassed by any theatre on the Coast” (The Oregon History Project).  It seems from this description, the designers certainly succeeded in giving movie star fans the movie star treatment.

The sign in front of the theatre gives a passer-by the chance to do more than just think about the present business, but it also allows a viewer to reflect on the past and learn more about their neighborhood’s culture.

Should self-service dominate the business world?

In the past year, our company, Landmark Signs, has undergone several major changes including a new and bigger office space, redesigning our logos, and trying to streamline and organize the way we do business.  With these changes, we have had to analyze our marketing approach and ultimately decide what type of company we want to be.  Because we are able to do such a wide variety of signs, this has been difficult for us to do.  We worry that focusing on one type of client may limit us and leave us without enough business to support ourselves, while trying to take care of too many clients may lead us to not delivering the quality products we know we can produce.

This past week we met up with a potential client, a high-end boutique, Zadig & Voltaire, out in West Hollywood.  They have stores all over Paris and London, and are very well known overseas.  But for whatever reason, they have not had the same amount of success in California as they have in Europe.   I thought this may have something to do with the fact that their sign was not very noticeable, and that maybe customers were simply passing them by because they did not know they were there. I felt certain that with more attention, they could be very successful because their merchandise was trendy and fashionable, just what LA loves.

After this meeting, this led us to ask ourselves, what should be the priority of Landmark Signs?  Obviously, we need to take care of our customers and provide for ourselves.  Without money, the business could not continue, and without satisfied customers, no one would want to work with us.  However, is the self-serving attitude really the best way to go?  Is it all about us, and how much money we make, and what we get out of the deal?  Or should we turn our attention to the type of clients who need us and the service we offer?  Shouldn’t it be about what we can do for them?  Maybe the reason we have not been able to decide what the best direction for our company is, is because we have been focusing too much on how we might profit off of our decision.

When we look at a company like Zadig & Voltaire, one that truly has a quality product, but just isn’t getting noticed enough, it makes us wonder if perhaps these types of clients should be our priority.  That’s what a sign is after all, a way to get noticed.  It tells passers-by a little something about your company, based on the design you choose, where your store is, and what type of store you are.  If this is our business, if this is what we do, then why wouldn’t we want our clients to be the ones who deserve to get noticed?  Not every job will make us as much money as it would if we chose to only work with the “big guys,” that’s true, but don’t the “big guys” already have enough attention?  At the end of the day, once our sign is installed, our client is finally getting the recognition they deserve, and we have delivered a product that does all we promised it would, then shouldn’t that be enough?
