Top 5 Exterior Directional Signs: Each Sign Tells a Story

maze-919271_1920.jpgJoanna just dropped off her son at his basketball practice at 4:15. With her 3-year old daughter in the backseat, soon she will need to pick her eldest daughter up from her after school yearbook class across town before turning back around the other way and getting her son from his practice. Since street traffic is beginning to increase moment by moment, she figures she has about 15 minutes to run into this new store she found online that has the exact vanity that she has been trying to find for weeks.

The only problem is, she can’t find the store. The address was listed on the website, and she knows it is somewhere in this complex, but is not sure exactly where. There is nothing to direct her path and she has been driving around this large complex for almost five minutes. By the time she finally finds the business, a small, obscure spot hidden around the corner, her fifteen minutes are up. In her frustration, she drives away deciding instead to buy the vanity through Amazon. As her thoughts turn to the rest of her day, the new shop she was excited to visit leaves her mind and won’t be given a second thought (except maybe when relaying her annoying experience to her friend over coffee tomorrow).

A customer, and any of her potential referrals, lost.

If that business had invested in exterior Directional Signage, they would have been easily found and been given the opportunity to impress Joanna with their excellent customer service and high-quality products.

Top 5 Blogs by Our Sign Expert

The sign industry is a complicated one, filled with many facets, details, and steps. Just trusting anyone with something as important as your sign will rarely work out in your favor. And despite the popularity of DIY, signage is not the place to Do It Yourself (don’t believe us, check out our blog here). Sometimes, you need to call in an expert to help you. Because purchasing a sign is a complex process including surveying the site, designing the sign, getting permits for the sign, manufacturing the sign, and installing the sign, it requires an expert touch.

John Myres, our sign expert, is a long-standing sign professional with over 45 years’ of experience. He has been a licensed electrical sign contractor since 1987 and a Design Director for one of the top three major sign corporations in the United States. He has been awarded first place for his sign designs in the State of California and achieved honorable mention with the International Sign Association. John is a true “sign veteran” who literally started by sweeping the floors in his father’s sign shop and over the years has had hands-on experience in almost every aspect of sign sales, design, project management, construction and installation.

Let’s take a look back at some of his top blogs to get a better understanding of the sign industry and what sign options might be the best for you.

#1 – The Sign Expert Says: What Do Signs Really Do For My Business?

In this blog, John breaks down the benefits of investing in quality signage even in an increasingly online world. He explains that…

“…while it is true that it is imperative that any successful business take advantage of and

spend a significant amount of their time and resources on social media and internet marketing, it is also true that through these mediums we are becoming inundated with advertising so that in many cases a good message is just going to be drowned out.  So how can you, Mr. or Ms. Business Owner, really make your company stand out in such a crazy environment?

A well designed and attractive sign just may be more key to your success than ever!”

#2 – The Sign Expert Says: Pylon or Pole Signs, What Are They and Why Would You Need One?

While reading this blog, you will learn about what Pylon (Pole) Signs can do for your business. John writes that…

bella spese pole sign“…the main benefit of Pylon / Pole Signs is that they can be seen from greater distances.  Monument Signs by contrast, are much more intimate, being valuable to advertise at eye level to passing street traffic.  But when your location can be seen from a distance, Pylon / Pole Signs make it possible for your business to be noticed over the top of ground obstructions such as trees, trucks and even buildings, far in advance of a driver arriving at your location.”

#3 – The Sign Expert Says: Comprehensive Sign Programs – How Can I make Sure I Get the Right One?

Here, John discusses the importance of sign programs and why it is vital to let a Sign Program by Landmark Signsprofessional handle do the work for you. He tells that…

“…comprehensive Sign Programs also often need to go through a process that includes thorough research of city codes and possibilities, engaging and negotiating with city planners and attendance and representation of your interests before a Design or Architectural Review Board or City Council.  You’ll need a company who can handle your project with professionalism and tact, with the right mix of assertiveness when necessary to protect your interests.”

#4 – The Sign Expert Says: Reception and Lobby Dimensional Signs – Do I need one? How nice should it be?

Couture Reception Sign

In this blog, our sign expert details what a lobby sign can do for your business and how important it is to have an elegant one. John explains that…

“…having either no identification on your wall or a poor one wastes all of that effort, cost and thought.  Having no Lobby Sign wastes the opportunity to show that logo and get the positive impressions that were intended.  It feels unnatural and makes people uncomfortable because it’s not there.  It makes them suspicious.”

#5 – The Sign Expert Says: “Why Refurbish an Old Sign?  Is it Possible?”

Pepper

While reading this blog, you can learn about when it is best to refurbish your sign instead of replacing it. Our sign expert details that one reason to keep an old sign is…

“…identity.  Sometimes a sign has such a long history and presence that it “becomes” the business in people’s minds.  Perhaps it’s unusual and iconic such as the Peppertree Lane Awning Sign above.  If the sign is removed and / or changed, that valuable presence in the mind of clients can be lost, causing negative reactions that can harm the business – even if the new sign is “better” or more “fashionable”!

Top 5 Lobby Signs: Each Sign Tells a Story

Related imageAmerican art director and graphic designer, Paul Rand once said that “Design is the silent ambassador for your brand” (1). There are many factors that determine the way people view your company. The way you interact with your clients tells lets them know if they will have a pleasant or difficult experience with your company. When they call you with a problem, how that complaint is received can be the difference between keeping a client or losing one. And of course, the appearance of a company lets consumers know whether or not they should value your company based on whether or not you do.

Appearance comes across in the way your employees dress, the layout of your offices or stores, and in everything that has your company’s name on it: including, and especially, your signage. And like Rand observed, the design of those signs, from Wall Signs to Monument Signs and Pole Signs to Directional Signs, sends silent messages to your customers about who your company is and what it represents.

Lobby Signs are no exception. In fact, since they are the signs that a customer sees upon entering your building, they can often send one of the strongest messages. Depending on your Lobby Sign, this can either work for you or against you. Even if your receptionist or store manager greets your clients with the friendliest of welcomes, if the Lobby Sign behind them is not well-made, elegantly designed, or updated, a negative story will be the one your customers remember.

Let’s take a look at 5 Lobby Signs by Landmark Signs and the positive story each one of these signs tells.

Top 5 Monument Signs: Each Sign Tells a Story

“Remember that your very first words, actions, and attitudes invariably sound the keynote.”

― Les Giblin, How to Have Confidence and Power in Dealing With People

We make impressions without even realizing it. Others are making assumptions about us based on things about us like our clothing, our hair color, and even the way we smile. Strangers in coffee shops form quick snap judgments about us without us ever opening our mouths to speak. A blonde woman in high heels and flashy jewelry is making impressions on every one she passes by without having the opportunity to confirm or refute those assumptions. As a result, a narrative about her life and her personality is created without her consent. An unauthorized autobiography. And once those stories are written, they can be very difficult to rewrite.

And it is not just in our personal life where this applies. In business, the way we conduct ourselves with our employees, how we treat our clients, and what services and products we provide all make impressions upon those that interact with us. And as Giblin noted, the very first interactions set the stage. Oftentimes, the first impression we make upon customers is our signage. Signage is out front, either above a building, on the street, or in the complex and it tells a story about our company long before we ever have the opportunity to tell it ourselves.

Monument Signs, being out on the street, are usually the first sign that someone sees. Thankfully, when designed well and installed properly, they send a very positive message. One of confidence, permanence, and dependability. Any company that takes the time to invest in a substantial Monument Sign is not going anywhere. And those viewing this sign receive this message, just like when they stand before the monuments in Washington DC, reflecting upon the long-lasting American democracy.

Let’s take a look at 5 of Landmark Signs’ Monument Signs and learn about what story they tell.

Kelvin Court Apartments Monument Sign

Monument Sign Designed, Manufactured, and Installed by Landmark Signs Inc.

Like most Monument Signs, this sign tells those passing by that this particular apartment complex is here to stay. But with this elegant and classic design (the clean aluminum lettering on the solid black face) one gets the message that the apartment complex itself is elegant and classic. Upon viewing this sign, one gets the impression that these apartments are beautiful, well-maintained, and that those in charge of the complex can be depended upon. Most apartment hunters would turn into this apartment complex expecting that what they find inside will live up to what the sign promises.

Christ Lutheran Church & School Monument Sign

People do not always think of schools and churches as needing a powerful Monument Sign. These types of business do not come and go very often like some other businesses might. However, people that walk past these Monument Signs are entrusting those inside the building with their children, their worldview, and their education. With a Monument Sign like the above, proudly displaying the name of the business, individuals are opening a book with a story that they expect to end well because this place appears reliable and solid.

Park Del Amo Monument Sign

Complex, centers, and property with several tenants find Monument Signs to be very useful. This allows all businesses within the complex to make a substantial impression all at the same time. These types of Monument Signs work on two levels: first of all, it shows businesses looking to rent a space within the complex that they can trust the property will not be going anywhere; secondly, it allows the businesses within the complex to capitalize on this impression themselves.

So, by using Gold Leaf lettering on this Monument Sign, not only does this sign tell others that they are trustworthy and dependable, but it also tells the story that their company, and services, are “as good as gold.”

County Line Animal Hospital Monument Sign

Any sort of business that is caring for people or animals has several impressions that it needs to make. They need to appear both reliable and supportive. In the service industry, knowledge is not enough. One must feel cared for as well. This Monument Sign with a comforting wood face and solid aluminum lettering shows customers that their sick or wounded animals will be looked after by not only a knowledgeable staff, but a caring one as well.

How To Avoid Common Sign Mistakes #9

door-1580861_1920“Location, location, location!” This is a phrase commonly reiterated when someone is buying property of any kind. Whether it be a house someone is buying for themselves, a piece of property a real estate agent is looking to sell, or a spot for a business to sell their goods and services.

Being a local Southern California sign business we certainly understand this. We are located in one of the most expensive places in the United States for buying property of any kind. For instance, in Orange County, there is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, 1566 square foot condo listed at $319,00 (1). Meanwhile in Snellville, Georgia $310,000 can make you the proud owner of 9 bed, 5.5 bath, 5,525 square foot house (2). And people pay for property in Orange County for one major reason. The location! In Orange County, most houses are no more than an hour from the beautiful beach. And let’s not forget that California is a place where the sun shines an average of 278 days a year! Plus, we are never lacking in things to do with an infinite number of movie theaters, shopping malls, restaurants, and more right around the corner.

What a difference location can make!

When investing in property for your business, it is extremely important to consider the location. Any serious business owner has to answer several questions before settling upon a location. Is it near major areas where my clientele can be found? Am I located by my suppliers? Is there a lot of traffic that passes by? If so, can they see my business from the street? (Read here to learn what to do if your business is located away from the street).

However, if a business focuses solely on the location of their business, they will be in danger a making another major sign mistake.

Common Sign Mistake #9: Not Checking In With Your Landlord or City About Sign Restrictions

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

A business that is looking to increase their sales, grow their brand, and establish their presence must have quality signage (Learn more about how signage can increase sales here). In fact, studies show that people view the a company’s sign as a direct reflection of that company (3). It makes sense. If a company doesn’t bother to purchase a quality sign, why would a potential client think that they would be provided with quality services and goods?

Perhaps a company has visions of an elegant Storefront Sign proudly proclaiming its name and location, while also having a substantial Monument Sign to catch the attention of those driving by on the street. Or maybe another business wants a classic Blade Sign over its walkway to let those walking by know where they are and a powerful Pole Sign to get noticed from far distances or on the freeway. However, even if a company fully intends to invest in the most valuable and varied signage, their dreams may be stopped dead in their tracks if they are at a location that limits their sign options. Different cities, property owners, and locations have their own sign requirements and restrictions.

Some cities are very flexible with signage and allow a business to invest in multiple sign types and accepting a different sign designs. However, there are several cities that limit business signage severely, even to the point of only allowing that business one Business Sign that must look the exact shape and size of all the other businesses in the center. So much for standing out!

Taking the time to check in with both the city and the landlord before setting up at a location, can make all the difference for your signage. Avoid this common sign mistake and invest in the signage that will send the right message to your customers. Need help determining city sign restrictions and requirements from the experts? Email or call Landmark Signs today and we will help you get the sign you need for your business to grow.

How to Avoid Common Sign Mistake #3

A gym-goer decides that he wants to bulk up his biceps. So he hits the gym everyday working through multiple sets of dumbbell curls, bar curls, chin ups, and more. His sole focus, 5 days a week, is to get biceps that will impress anyone who glances at him. And soon, he has achieved his goal. His “guns” are thick, masculine, and as well sculpted as an ancient Greek marble statue. As he admires his man of steel biceps in the mirror, he notices for the first time that while his arms look like the hulk, the rest of his body is starting bear a striking resemblance to Gumby. As a result of his hyper-focused workouts, the shape and definition that he once had when he had been spending time on an all-over body workout has faded and left behind a figure that leaves much to be desired.

While this may seem like an exaggeration, the truth is that it is very easy to get too focused on one aspect of life and disregard the others. The result is disproportionate; one area may be blossoming with attention and effort, however the benefit is usually overshadowed by all the other facets that have been neglected.

This often happens in business, especially in moments of crisis. If a company notices sales steadily decreasing, they can be so focused on increasing sales and saving money, that components like employee training, customer care, and marketing strategy falls by the wayside, sometimes leading the very ending that a company was working so hard to avoid.

Investing in signage follows the same idea. Businesses taking the time to purchase a well-made, unique sign will most definitely increase sales and exposure of a business (Check out why this is true, here). Let’s take a look at a common mistake that businesses can make when they get hyper-focused on just one sign type.

Common Sign Mistake #3: Only Having One Sign Type

Illuminated Pole Sign HyperionPurchasing a sign is a great step for any business anxious to improve sales and visibility. However, many times a business will stop once they have one sign type. Perhaps they have a Store-Front Sign and feel that now that their business name is visible to anyone near their front door, than their sign needs are taken care of. Or they are now very proud of their Directional Signage that leads customers right to their door. Maybe their Illuminated Signage captures the attention of people passing by during their night capturing business they never had access to before.

All of these sign types are an excellent choice for any business wanting to make a powerful impression upon their current and potential clients. However, most locations provide businesses the opportunity to gain even more visibility by having more than one sign type.

Different sign types provide the option to gain access to different clients and make unique impressions. For instance, a Monument Sign gets a business visibility from the

street, which is especially important when a business is set back in a complex or located far from the street. They wow clients with an impression of permanence and power. Also, Blade Signs are often placed above a walkway and meant to get the attention of passers-by walking directly in front of your store who cannot see the Wall Sign. Their impression is one of class and helpfulness. Additionally, Pole Signs are a great chance to get attention for your business from great distances or from the freeway. They make a dramatic impact every time.

Call or email Landmark Signs today and take advantage of all the benefits that having multiple sign types offer.

Your Business Name in Lights: Sign Lighting Option #1

The last several blogs, we have discussed not only the different types of signs that are commonly illuminated like Monument Signs, Pole Signs, and more, we have also gone over the reasons why a sign should be illuminated.  A sign that is illuminated will be more visible at night, will help your company stand out from the competition, and advertise your business even while you are away.

With an understanding of what illuminated signage can do for your business, it is also important to know what your sign lighting options are. Because the truth is, not all sign lighting is the same. Depending on your goal and the impression you want your business to make, each sign lighting option will have a different impact on potential and current customers.

This is not an area to take lightly since a study found that “More than two thirds (68%) of consumers believe a store’s signage is reflective of the quality of its products and services” (read more here). Which means that you have the opportunity to significantly increase your sales if your sign sends the right message. It also means that if your sign poorly reflects upon your services and products, you might be losing two-thirds of your potential customer base.

But you do not have to determine which sign lighting option is best for your business on on your own. Not only will our sign expert with over 40 years of experience guide you when it’s time to upgrade your own sign with illumination, we have also taken the time to break down the different sign lighting options that can make all the difference for your business.

Verizon Standard Channel Letters
Standard Lit Through Channel Letter Sign by Landmark Signs

Sign Lighting Option #1: Standard Lit Through Signage

The Basics

Standard lit through signage is exactly how it sounds: a sign that is illuminated internally and shines through the signage it is found in. This sign lighting technique is used to make the face of a sign light up and be seen from far distances. They can be illuminated using either Neon lights, the more traditional type of internal and external illumination, or through LED lighting options, which are generally more environmentally friendly.

The Impact

This is a very common form of sign lighting that is usually found in a Channel Letter Sign. However, just because it is common, does not mean it is boring and ordinary. In fact, research was conducted in which the effectiveness of internal illumination was tested. It was concluded that  “internally illuminated on-premise signs have been shown to significantly increase the distance at which these signs can be read.”

This is because standard lit through internal signage is the ideal option for business looking to get their signs noticed from afar. This lighting option helps a business stand out from its competition and make a powerful impact on those passing by. For a business wanting to make sure that their name is seen in lights, this sign lighting option is a great way to achieve that affect.

Conclusion

Standard lit through illumination will be sure that your sign is seen from a distance and will draw your customers to you. If you want to learn more about this sign lighting option, shoot us an email or give us a call and we’d be happy to give your more information so you can make sure that your business name is seen in lights.

Why Should I Illuminate My Business Sign? Part Three

women-1209678_1920Owner. CEO. Marketer. Salesman. Accountant. Manager. HR Director. Which one of these do you claim as your business title? If you answered, “Owner” then we know that you are the only one on the list who could also have answered, “CEO,” “Marketer”, “Salesman” and every other title identified, plus a few more. This is because as an owner of a business, you have to fill in, step in, or take over all of these positions at some point in your business, most likely at some point of your every single day.

As a result of business owners having to do it all, most are severely lacking in time. According to a survey done by Guidant Financial, “time management [was ranked] as the third biggest challenge (at 24 percent) of being a small business owner. From constant interruptions, such as emails, phone calls and instant messages, to busy meeting schedules and last-minute deadlines, distractions abound.” Getting back some of your precious time is a valuable asset and there are several ways that investing in a sign, whether it be a Monument Sign, Pole Sign, 3D Sign, or a Channel Letter Sign, will help you do just that (read more here).

But in order to really get the most out of your signage it is also important that your business’s name can be seen in lights. Illuminated signage can do more than just get you extra time because it can also maximize the time that you do have. Let’s take a look at another reason why you should illuminate your business sign.

Why You Should Illuminate Your Business Sign #3: Advertise While You Are Away

Verizon Standard Channel Letters
Verizon Wireless Illuminated Channel Letter Sign by Landmark Signs

Normally, when the owner leaves for the day the work leaves with him or her. When the dark-2595779_1920lights are turned off, the door locked, and the owner’s car pulls away the business stops. Even when the top employees are at work while the owner is not, the work done will most likely not be the same quality or done with the same effort. This is not fault of the employees because despite their best efforts, the work does not mean as much to them since it is not their business (learn how signage can help with the small business problem of finding reliable employees here). Their livelihood is not on the line, but yours sure is.

Wouldn’t it be nice to know that there is some aspect of your business that is still performing at the same level while you are away.  Illuminated signage can do just that for you! When you leave for the day, turn off all the lights except for one: your lighted sign. Let it be your marketer for the evening while you get some much needed rest and relaxation.

An illuminated sign draws the attention of passers-by at night (especially in winter hours), helps you stand out from the competition, and advertises while you are away. The impact of this cannot be overstated because it turns out that “three out of four consumers saying they have told someone about a store based simply on its signage” (learn more here).  Not to mention the fact that “word-of-mouth is the primary factor behind 20 to 50 percent of all purchasing decisions” (Source).

An illuminated sign is the chance to substantially increase your word of mouth marketing, maximize your time, and advertise even while you are out of the office. You already do it all during business hours. Let your illuminated sign take some of the responsibility while you are away.

How To Use Signage to Solve 3 Small Business Problems: An Overview

For the past several blogs, we have taken the big picture problems that all small businesses face, and zoomed in on how signage can solve those problems. Although there are many challenges business owners face, we chose to focus on the top three that can really bog a business down if it does not come up for a solution for dealing with them.  We encourage you to go back and take a look at those blogs for a comprehensive coverage of the challenges. However, today, we will briefly go over all the elements to give you a panoramic view of the following small business issues and how signage can be used to alleviate them: not enough time, finding reliable employees, and getting the word out about your business.

How Signage Can Solve Small Business

Problem #1: Not Enough Time

Solution #1 – Stop Chasing Down Potential Customers

Did you know that 2 out of every 3 consumers see a direct link between your company and its sign? That means if they like what they see, it will imply positive connotation and therefore, positive beliefs about your business.  That also shows that the opposite is true – a poorly-made sign in the mind of a consumer indicates a poorly-run company.

With Landmark Signs’ help, you can have a sign the sends a positive message to your customers. One that doesn’t yell at them from the TV screen, send them an obnoxious text during dinner time, or distract with annoying ads while they are reading an article online. Signage saves you time because it lets the customer come to you.

Solution #2 – Market Your Business Without Lifting a Finger

If you are working a 40-hour work week (although as a small business owner, it is most likely at least 10 hours more than that) you are spending about half your time marketing your business.

Imagine getting back half of your work hours? That is 20 hours or more that signage can free up because signs, like 3D Signs, tell consumers what your business is all about like we learned in the last point. Market your business with a great sign without you having to do any of the leg-work.

offended a client or said something untrue about what you offer and you have to fix it? Yep, we’ve been there too. And even though those employees are well meaning, sometimes we end up spending a lot time dealing with the clean up.

However, once you have a sign that sends the right message about your company, you will never have to worry about it reflecting negatively upon your business.  Looking to tell a story of permanence and longevity? We’ve got just the Monument Sign for you! Want to let them know that you are creative and exciting? A LED Store Front Sign will do the trick! Want to appear as good as gold? For most brick and mortar stores, the majority of your customers are going to come from within 5 miles of your store. Which means that many of your potential clients are seeing your sign 60 times a month! That is 60 opportunities to cement in their minds the image you want to project.

A unique, custom made sign can serve as a marketer for your growing business. It’s an employee that will never complain about the work, be there even when you are not, and can sell as good as any salesman!

Conclusion: How To Use Signage to Solve the Small Business Problem # 3: Getting the Word Out About Your Business

“Never forget that you only have one opportunity to make a first impression – with investors, with customers, with PR, and with marketing.”Natalie Massenet, Fashion Entrepreneur and Founder of Net-a-Porter

Over the last several weeks, our series of blogs have focused on the reasons that signage is a highly effective marketing strategy to solve the small business problem of getting the word out. First of all, signage is the type of advertising that has no risk of annoying your potential clients with pesky pop-up ads and unsolicited phone calls since it allows your customers to come to you. Secondly, studies have shown that 75% of customers have told others about a company based on its signage alone, making it a reliable referral tool. Finally, signage gets your company great visibility as it is seen by local customers everyday to the tune of 60 times a month. Not bad for just one marketing strategy.

While there are many other reasons that prove signage is a great marketing solution for getting the word out about your business, today we want to focus on a theme that kept coming up as we discussed this marketing strategy. That is, the impression theses signs make. You see, all of the above results that come from using signage as productive advertising depends upon your sign making a good impression. If it doesn’t, then these results will not come. It is kind of like buying a treadmill and never using it. It’s not the treadmill’s fault that you aren’t losing weight.

So it goes with signage. It is not enough to just have a sign. It’s about having the best sign option for your company. One that is well-made and long-lasting. Plus, it needs to send the right message about who you are and what your company does. Let’s break down five different types of signage and the impression that they make upon others about your company. Don’t forget, Landmark Signs can help you with all of these requirements so that your sign will make the best first impression.

#1: Monument Signs

Monument Signs are a great option for making sure that your business is visible from the street. This is especially important if your company is set back away from the street or is in an office complex.

This type of signage reflects what it is named after – a monument. It is solid and substantial, made with long-lasting materials like wood, acrylic, gold leaf and more. Monument Signs give off the impression of a company that is stable, permanent, and strong. When we see a Monument Sign, we think of a business that is reliable and here to stay.

#2: Gold Leaf Signs

Gold Leaf Signs can be used on any number of sign options including a Monument Sign, Window Graphic, Lobby Sign, and more.

Because this type of sign literally turns your sign into a piece of art, it send the message of beauty and elegance. It tells those who gaze upon your exquisite sign that your company is worth its weight in gold!

3D Signs can be placed on walls outside above your doors or inside your office. They can be made of acrylic, metal, stainless steel, finished with gold leaf and more.

The dimension and perspective they provide make an impact on viewers. The impression they make is understated, and these signs are a great option for letting customers know that your business has class and is full of innovation.

#5: Lobby Signs

Lobby Signs show others that your company is proud of who you are and what services you offer. Not only do they show company pride, but they are also welcoming and let customers know that you are a dependable business.

Conclusion

No matter what sign type you choose, it is vital that it sends the right message about your small business. Making the best impression with the best materials and design is a significant factor in whether or not your sign will be a marketing solution for you.
