Football season kicks off in just two days. The season is right around the corner with the opening game taking place between the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers . It is the start of a season of the year that has become an integral part of American culture. During this time, it is difficult to find a house where a football game is not on the TV either emphatically being watched or as a part of the home’s background noise. Saying you are busy every Sunday from Kickoff Day until the Superbowl is an absolutely acceptable reason not to make an event or outing. And, Thanksgiving, another staple of American society, would hardly be Thanksgiving without turkey, yams, pumpkin pie and of course, a Dallas Cowboys game. As a country, we cherish this pastime, perfectly content to watch let our fall Sundays (and Thursday evenings and Monday nights) pass us by in a haze of helmet crackling tackles, elbow-nudging rivalries, and liquid cheese soaked chips. Football: we love to watch it and we also, love to commemorate it.
Which is where signage comes in. It is a chance to tell their fans that this year, this year is the year. A year that promises to be full of potential and victory. What better for a franchise to display their faith in football than to reflect this certainty in their signage? Signage is the triumphant touchdown dance to a stadium looking to upgrade their look.
A dance the Kansas City Chiefs were eager to master. Not only was the new signage an opportunity to promise future victories it was also a moment to commemorate past legacies. Steve Aust, in the article “Fit For a Chief” writes that “as part of a $300 million renovation completed this year, team officials sought to honor the team’s legacy with an extensive sign and wall-graphic program for Arrowhead Stadium, the Chiefs’ home since 1972.” The full color Wall Graphics display the bold red colors reflecting Kansas City Chief pride with images of both current stars and former football legends. Fans can stroll through the stadium being reminded of the team’s former glory and anxiously anticipating it’s future glory, wondering what will happen next. Months of whistles and penalties and hail-Mary’s stand between the potential and the fruition.
In the meantime, the team’s signage delivers. Will the Kansas City Chiefs deliver? Well that, remains to be seen.
