Meanwhile in Snellville, Georgia $310,000 can make you the proud owner of 9 bed, 5.5 bath, 5,525 square foot house (2). And people pay for property in Orange County for one major reason. The location! In Orange County, most houses are no more than an hour from the beautiful beach. And let’s not forget that California is a place where the sun shines an average of 278 days a year! Plus, we are never lacking in things to do with an infinite number of movie theaters, shopping malls, restaurants, and more right around the corner.

What a difference location can make!

During the 20th century, lights fueled by neon and its fellow noble gases were icons of commerce and entertainment, illuminating the modern age” (1).

Neon lit signs, which also came to be known as “liquid fire” have a long and rich history in the sign industry. In fact, the first Neon Sign was displayed in 1923, by George Claude, and his company when he sold a neon gas sign “to a Packard car dealership in Los Angeles. Earle C. Why Should I Illuminate My Business Sign? Part One

Though most successful businesses understand the significance of having a well-made sign, some do not understand why we often make the suggestion of illuminating the sign. Many things change during the winter time. In many places it means that snow covers the streets in a pearl dusting, leaves fall from the trees that were once covered in an anthem of autumn colors, and wind blows with a fresh, cold bite. It is true that as a Southern California sign company, most of our clients experience a much milder form of the winter described above. However, no matter where you are in the United States, winter has at least one shared characteristic: the dark of night comes earlier.

This means that there are many hours that potential customers are driving by your business while it is dark outside. After 5 pm is a time that many people are commuting home from work and are stuck at a stand-still traffic during rush hour, which gives them plenty of time to look out the window and notice what is around them, including your business.

A sign, no matter how elegant and unique, will not be seen by those driving by if it blends into the background of the night.  If it is surrounded by an outline of light, it is sure to stand out against it’s dark backdrop, but without it, the eye will quickly move past your business sign onto something else that catches its attention.

Even during the rest of the year, when the daylight lasts longer than in the winter, there are still many hours people are out driving around in the night time. An illuminated sign is a great way to be noticed during those dark hours. “Businesses surveyed 7,203 first-time customers within 30 to 45 days after the installation of a new sign and asked ‘how did you learn about us?’” Interestingly, 46% of people surveyed answered that they learned about the business from the sign. Part Three: How To Use Signage to Solve the Small Business Problem # 3: Getting the Word Out About Your Business

Gary Shouldis, founder of the web marketing company 3Bug Media, reached out to small businesses to ask them: “what is your biggest struggle?” There were many answers ranging from cash flow to hiring employees (see our answer to the struggle to find reliable employees here). Of the many answers received, there were several consistencies including trying to advertise their companies. Here are of few of the answers he received:

“I don’t have enough money for marketing.  I’ve spent so much money advertising over the past year and it’s done nothing to bring new business.  I’m at a loss right now as to what to do next.”

It seems fairly obvious that your sign will be seen by local customers regularly. However, the numbers reveal that they see your sign much more often than you might think. Studies conducted show that “the average person will see your sign about twice per day, or about sixty times a month” (read more here).

That number represents opportunities – 60 opportunities to be exact – to make an impression about who your business is and what it can do for passers-by. When you combine this number with the fact that 75% of people refer based on the signage alone, it becomes clear that signage is an excellent marketing strategy. Not only is it guaranteed to be seen by local customers, which is where much of our business comes from, but it also serves as an excellent referral tool.

Rather than spending time trying to convince you about the importance of having a sign, let’s assume that you are already aware that a sign is necessary for your business (should you need that convincing, read our recent blog on this topic here). This means that you most likely already have a sign (if not, give us a call). If it isn’t too much trouble, take a second and step outside to look at your sign.

While you are out there ask yourself, “If I was a customer, what would I think about my business if I saw this sign?” “Is my sign even visible from the street or for customers walking by?” “Does my sign accurately reflect who we are and what type of service we offer?” Go ahead–we’ll wait.
