During the 20th century, lights fueled by neon and its fellow noble gases were icons of commerce and entertainment, illuminating the modern age” (1).

Neon lit signs, which also came to be known as “liquid fire” have a long and rich history in the sign industry. Look back at any photograph from the 20th century, and the signs pictured in it are most certainly Neon signs.  Not only were they the first type of illuminated signage, but they are also the most powerful even to this day.

In fact, the first Neon Sign was displayed in 1923, by George Claude, and his company when he sold a neon gas sign “to a Packard car dealership in Los Angeles. Earle C. Anthony purchases the two signs reading ‘Packard’ for $24,000” (2). Every small business owner has found themselves in this position at some point; and all they really want for Christmas is to keep their company growing and profitable. However, once again all of these paths require time, or the money to pay someone else for their time.  Plus, they need constant upkeep to be successful including writing daily posts, creating weekly blogs, and designing monthly ads and email campaigns. Well, we think, what about the more tried and true form of advertising.  Marketing materials like flyers, coupons, direct mail, and ads in newspapers or magazines have been around for long enough. Consumers have no control over when they will receive the next unsolicited text message or hear the next obnoxious jingle on the radio.  In fact Bob Gilbreath, author of The Next Evolution of Marketing”, presents some revealing facts in his book when he explains that a whopping 76% of Americans are on the National Do Not Call Registry to avoid intrusive sales calls, most people will fast forward through commercials while watching TV to bypass commercials, and the software called Adblock Plus which blocks banner ads and pop-ups online was voted the “best product” and won an award from PC World. This signals a real and deep-seated annoyance and dislike of advertising.

As business owners, we have all struggled on occasion to find employees that we felt like cowboy-hats-3265970_1920we could truly depend on to be a part of our small business.  There are a number of reasons for this. First of all, because we are small businesses, employees are often required to juggle multiple tasks and wear several different hats.  Sometimes our marketing team of one or two, also needs to be writers of blogs, salesmen of products, and customer service reps. This is often a part of the job that employees are not prepared for and can be an overwhelming aspect of working for a small business.
