3 Reasons Your Business Can Fight Back at Amazon with Signage

Studies found that the closer a small business was to a Walmart, the more likely it was to end up closing. For every closer a mile was to Walmart, it was 6% more likely to close, while a whopping 35-60% of stores that were located the closest would go out of business. (Source).

Walmart was certainly an entity to be reckoned with.  However, this was mostly a threat smartphone-2995676_1280.pngfor smaller businesses that did not have the same marketing budget as the bigger companies, like Best Buy, JC Penny, and Toys R’ Us who managed to weather the Walmart storm cloud.  Fast forward to today though, and these brick and mortar stores are quaking and folding in the force of a much more formidable foe, one whose omnipresence makes it a threat no matter where a store is located. Being that most of you are business, you most likely have already guessed that I am referring to the online giant, Amazon.  

JC Penney closed 140 of its stores in 2017 and announced that it will continue to close stores this year.  Best Buy plans to close all 250 of its mobile phone stores.  Toys R Us just recently released a statement saying that it will close or sell all 735 of its stores bringing an end to the only store that really seemed to be ours as children as we strolled happily through aisles and aisles of dolls, games, and action figures (we are in intentionally leaving out the countless temper tantrums that could easily ruin the nostalgia we’ve reminded you of).  Even Walmart is not immune, which will close 63 of its Sam’s Club locations impacting 9,400 employees.

A business like that would have a harder time getting their customers to leave than getting them to stay.  However, for many possible customers this is not actually their first impression of you.  Their first impression of you is usually long before you have the chance to wow them with your personality and your professionalism.

What this tells us is that many of your potential customers are actually getting their first impression about your company from your sign. Furthermore, they see your sign again and again, which means that whatever first impression they get of your company will most likely be solidified again and again. A study done by Bertram Gawronski, social psychologist and professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, found that the “results support the common observation that first impressions are notoriously persistent.”

oldtimer-60521_1280The role of salesmen and marketers has radically transformed over the last century and a half.  For instance, the Industrial Revolution was a time when consumers had the opportunity to buy many products, rather than having to make them themselves.  It was also a time where there were few competitors, so businesses did not have to put a whole lot of effort into convincing their customers that they were the best.  A business’ main focus during this time was their production, not their customer.

Right around the turn of the century and into the 1940’s, competition in the business world increased.  And the focus turned from producing to branding.  Companies took advantage of the newer technologies like the radio, television, and phone to reach their consumers. While the goal was to convince their customers that they were the best, the customers themselves were still not the main focus. Building the ideal brand was the top discussion around the conference room table.

smartphone-1445489_1920Fast forward to today and not only do businesses have to compete with innumerable competitors, we also have to recognize that our consumers are now the ones in control.  Because they can access information anytime they want through social media and the internet, harassing them with phone calls, emails, and TV ads only alienate them. Jingles won’t do the trick, no matter how catchy.  They do not need more information coming at them trying to convince them that our service or product “Cannot be beat!” Instead, they rely on their own impressions, and the impressions of their friends, to determine whether or not to give a company a try.

The focus of any successful business should not be solely on creating a better product or building a stronger brand.  In today’s marketing industry, it is vital that the customer not only be taken care of, but actually listened to.

Last week we learned that 68% of customers see a direct correlation between a company and its sign.   That is two of out every three customers!  What can be gained from this insight is that a sign is an absolute necessity for any serious business.  Today, we will learn that not only do customers connect the dots between your business and your signage, they also might not even step foot in your door if they do not like what they see.

It is hard to argue that a sign is not necessary, especially after looking at last week’s blog and the statistics.  However, some companies just stop there.  And really who can blame them.  With all the costs it takes to run a successful company – supplies, advertising, employees – businesses are always looking for ways to cut costs.  Sometimes this can make the difference between being able to pay all of your employees and having to let go of a member of your business family. A Sign Becomes a Key to the Past

A couple of months ago, Landmark Signs made a trip up to Sacramento to put up a First American sign, a Channel Letter Sign with halo lighting.  Because we are avid travelers, once our sign was installed and we realized were ahead of schedule, we decided to go explore some of the surrounding areas a little bit, deciding to turn our work trip into a mini road trip as well.  It wasn’t long before we turned down a little road off interstate 160 and were intrigued by this neon sign we came across that read “Chop Suey”, pointing down to the street below.  From the looks of it, it appeared to be old, possibly very old since neon signs were first used as early as 1937. Upon closer inspection we discovered not only an antique sign, but a 3-street town that once house was established in 1915 by Chinese immigrants who moved there after a fire had destroyed their previous town: the town of Locke.

We really couldn’t believe our luck, not only did we come across a unique and interesting sign, one that piqued our interests and inspired ideas and enthusiasm for our work, but we also came across a whole other world that we never knew existed.  It felt like a portal to a secret world, full of past lives and stories that we might never have the pleasure of hearing.  Walking down the main street, much of the buildings were deserted, dilapidated, abandoned or simply too old to really paint a clear picture of the town’s history.  So we made our way to the visitor’s center, a restored building that was once the town’s boarding house.  Inside, we were treated to a tour of the house, a detailed history of Locke (originally Lockeport), and images upon images of the people and buildings of old.  Some of my favorites were images of an all-women’s basketball team and two young women from the 1920’s dressed as flappers standing in front of the theater.

Also, upon further investigation, we found an image of the building the “Chop Suey” sign was pointing to that was taken in 1939.  Although, because of the layout of the town (there is a street a level up with the upstairs portions of the shops, where we found the sign, while the mains street is one level down) we weren’t able to see the sign in that image, it lead us to believe that it is very likely that the sign we found is at least as old as the photo, how exciting!

As we discovered, there is so much more to a story than what meets the eye.  What started out as a work trip became a pleasant memory and a journey into the past, one filled with stories and images that we might never have discovered if we hadn’t been curious about that little “Chop Suey” sign.
