Part Three: How To Use Signage to Solve the Small Business Problem # 3: Getting the Word Out About Your Business

Gary Shouldis, founder of the web marketing company 3Bug Media, reached out to small businesses to ask them: “what is your biggest struggle?” There were many answers ranging from cash flow to hiring employees (see our answer to the struggle to find reliable employees here). Of the many answers received, there were several consistencies including trying to advertise their companies. Here are of few of the answers he received:

“I don’t have enough money for marketing.  I’ve spent so much money advertising over the past year and it’s done nothing to bring new business.  I’m at a loss right now as to what to do next.”

“I can’t find any good places to advertise my business.  I don’t know how to reach my customers as I feel everything I spend money on is a total waste.”

These are the types of problems that keep small business owners up at night. Perhaps you too, have tossed and turned over a marketing problem. In an attempt to provide a resolution to this small business challenge and several others (read more about how signage can give you back some of your time) we have spent the last several blogs exploring how signage is a great solution for businesses who need to get the word out about their company but are lacking in time, energy, or employees to effectively do so.

Not only does signage allow the customers to come to you which helps you appear confident and less pushy than annoying advertisements, it also encourages customers to tell others about you since studies show that 3 out of 4 customers have referred a business based solely on their signage. It seems fairly obvious that your sign will be seen by local customers regularly. However, the numbers reveal that they see your sign much more often than you might think. Studies conducted show that “the average person will see your sign about twice per day, or about sixty times a month” (read more here).

That number represents opportunities – 60 opportunities to be exact – to make an impression about who your business is and what it can do for passers-by. When you combine this number with the fact that 75% of people refer based on the signage alone, it becomes clear that signage is an excellent marketing strategy. Not only is it guaranteed to be seen by local customers, which is where much of our business comes from, but it also serves as an excellent referral tool.

Rather than spending time trying to convince you about the importance of having a sign, let’s assume that you are already aware that a sign is necessary for your business (should you need that convincing, read our recent blog on this topic here). This means that you most likely already have a sign (if not, give us a call). If it isn’t too much trouble, take a second and step outside to look at your sign.

While you are out there ask yourself, “If I was a customer, what would I think about my business if I saw this sign?” “Is my sign even visible from the street or for customers walking by?” “Does my sign accurately reflect who we are and what type of service we offer?” Go ahead–we’ll wait.

If your answer to any of these questions is “No” you are still making an impression upon business-2884023_1280.jpgpassing customers. However, you are in danger of making a bad impression upon them – not just once, not twice, but 60 times!

With all the things you have to worry about, having a sign that makes a bad first impression should not be one of them. You work hard to represent your company in the best possible light. Shouldn’t your sign do the same?
