Sign Type Diversity by Landmark Signs: Non-illuminated or Illuminated

Signs come in all shapes and sizes, colors, and materials like aluminum, acrylic or gold leaf.  Some are subtle and elegant, while others are bold and vibrant.  There is the option of having a sign stories high and seen from afar or on the ground and meant to be seen at street level.  Others still are lit up with neon or LED while there are signs that are non-illuminated.

While many assume that a sign needs to or should be illuminated, that is not always the case. Sometimes a sign is not in a location where it makes sense to have illumination since there is not a lot of traffic. Also a sign simply may not have the need to be illuminated like an ADA Sign or a Wood Sign.  And some clients simply prefer the elegance and intrigue of a 3D Sign that isn’t illuminated, preferring to maintain the status of a store that is a city’s “best kept secret.”

More well-known and more highly recommended, especially for places where street visibility is a possibility, illuminated signs make an impact.  There are many different options for illuminating a sign, through LED, Neon, or fluorescent sign lighting.

Not only are their different ways to light up a sign, there are also different styles: internally, externally, or both and directly or indirectly (halo) or both.

For a more subtle way to illuminate, Landmark Signs recommends halo lighting.  For a bolder a approach, direct lighting is ideal.  And for an even bigger impact, Landmark Signs can fabricate a sign with both indirect and direct illumination.

Sometimes our client’s come to us with a desire to make a big impact, one that can be seen for miles around. Installing a Channel Letter Sign or a Banner on a high rise building or a Pylon Sign can have its own unique challenges. At Landmark Signs we understand that such signs requires a lot of planning, safety precautions, detailed designs and the understanding of just how big the sign needs to be in order to be seen, since the viewer’s perspective varies greatly with a sign up high.

Down Low

Then there are those who want to have presence on the ground. There building is set back far enough from the street or large enough that signs on the ground are necessary. Directional Signs, A-frame Signs, and Monument Signs are some of the options for those clients whose signs need to be down low. These firmly mounted signs show stability and permanence, and catch the attention on any customers passing by, providing them with direction and information.

If you require a sign up high, several stories off the ground or a sign down low, for directional or identification purposes, than contact Landmark Signs. With whatever sign type you may require, we’re here for you!

California Sign Hotel Tour: The Paso Robles Inn

Signs speak. They speak of prominence, they speak of establishment, and they speak of history. Even if the sign itself has not been in existence since the institution it represents, its very creation points to a company or business that has survived, overcome and has a story to tell.   The wonder of signage is that it says more than the letters spelled out for us. It says, “I’m here, I’ve been here, and I have a story to tell.”

And since a sign can’t literally speak, it is up to use, the view of the sign to draw conclusions from the history of the site the sign rests upon. California Inns certainly has a vast and interesting history. So let’s take a look back at the past, inspired by these monumental signs to dig up the tales of these landmark hotels. A couple have even been around for over 100 years.

Paso Robles Inn

Opened In: 1891

Location: Paso Robles, CA

Channel Letter Sign

Originally, this establishment was a part of a land grant that was a resting stop for those who traveled the Camino Real trail, an area known for its mineral hot springs. In 1891, when Paso Robles became a city, plans took place to construct a Restaurantbeautiful hotel, marking this significant moment in the city’s history. This hotel featured a “seven-acre garden and nine-hole golf course. Inside was a library, a beauty salon, a barbershop and various billiard and lounging rooms” (Read More). The gorgeous and stately hotel was a landmark for the city, with the likes of Theordore Roosevelt, Clark Gable, and Douglas Fairbanks staying as the Inn’s guests.

Unfortunately in 1940, the Inn was ravaged by a fire, tragically destroying the historical site. Undeterred by these unfortunate circumstances, it wasn’t long after that the city was ready to begin rebuilding. Astoundingly, by 1942, just two years after the entire hotel was devastated, the Paso Robles Inn was once again open for business.

Untouched for a number of decades due to economic hardship, the hotel was purchased by Martin Resorts in 1999, when the win industry was thriving. Much of the site was remolded to reflect the early 20th century splendor of its founding. Even when a large earthquake struck the area in 2003, destroying some of the suites, new construction was ordered and completed. It seems that there isn’t much that can prevent the city from making sure it’s history remain intact and honored.Grounds

Today, much of the original beauty of the property is reflected in the style and designs. It is a “mission style hotel [that] also boasts a steakhouse…lush gardens, and a historic ballroom in the heart of Central California’s wine country” (Learn more). It is truly a hotel that represents determination and perseverance. And with an internally illuminated Channel Letter Sign  boldly and proudly proclaiming it’s residence to all passers-by, it’s no wonder we want to learn more about its exciting history.

Sign Blog: New Monument Sign Marks the Historic Spot

Oftentimes signage can serve as a marker to convey important details about a historical site. Although the sign itself may not be historic, it is drawing attention to a significant spot that has withstood the test of time. So, when constructing a sign that is intended to make a moment in history, it is important that the design reflect this desire. As can be seen with the post and panel signs built to commemorate the Cape St. George Lighthouse built in 1852 and rebuilt in 2008, restored to its original glory. The design of these signs reflect not only the look and feel of a lighthouse, but also conveys a sense of history, and as with most Monument Signs reflects permanence and significance.
